Enhancement of Stellar Interferometry Systems

This image represents an overview of the VLT Interferometer as it was operated when the light beams from two of the 8.2-m telescopes were combined. The VINCI instrument that was used for the present test, is located at the common focus in the Interferometric Laboratory.

In fiber optics, combining light from several telescopes is still a challenge. Sensitivity of the interferometer depends on the scalability of large arrays of telescopes, overall beam combiner transmission, Visibility 2 Pixel Matrix conditioning, polarization and intrinsic chromatic dispersion of the beam combiner. In this project related to the field of stellar interferometry, the team had shown results for the experiments done with 4 or6 telescopes using DBC architecture. This was done to justify the need to perform research for the combination of more number of telescopes, and to measure the Signal to Noise ratio of the recovered fringe with the visibility amplitude of the target.
